5 Reasons to Watch “The Good Place”

the good place

If you have followed my articles at all, you know that I enjoy finding out about new shows. I love different types of shows that can peak my interest and, potentially, become a binge watch for me.

TV shows are usually the way that I relax after a long day at work or traveling around. They help me get my mind off the hustle and bustle that can cause stress. They also can create great conversations with others and allow you to “break the ice” with new co-workers, friends, or even at a sports game.

So, when my friend recommended that I watch The Good Place, I could not turn down the opportunity. So, what is “The Good Place”? Here is a quick synopsis about the show:

“When a tractor-trailer carrying erectile dysfunction products strikes and kills Eleanor Shellstrop, she's surprised to find herself in the "good" area of the afterlife. She quickly realizes she has been mistaken for someone else when her wise, newfound mentor tells her she earned her place by helping get innocent people off death row. She decides that she wants to shed her old foul-mouthed and hard-drinking ways and find a way to embrace the good person within -- at least when she isn't considering finding a way to return to her mundane existence back on Earth.”

Before you start to think that this just sounds weird – I admit, it sounds pretty cheesy – you have to give it a shot. Kristen Bell, who plays Eleanor Shellstrop in the show, has hilarious facial reactions, filtered curse words (they change the F word to “fork”), and one liners, will have you hooked from the very first episode.

Here are 5 reasons that you should watch “The Good Place”. While I am sure that there are more, I will cap it at 5 so you are not reading this article for too long.

1. It Is A Family Friendly Show

Nowadays, I can be hard to find a show that you absolutely feel comfortable watching if your kids or parents are sitting right next to you. However, this is one of those shows that you will feel entirely comfortable to do just that. While it still has some “adult” themed parts, such as cursing, they will filter the word (as mentioned above) because it is the “good” place and there is no cussing there. While the show can be somewhat cheesy at certain parts, they do a good job of balancing it out with great content and good actors.

2. It Creates Humor Out Of A Serious Topic

The “afterlife” can be somewhat of a touchy topic. The opinions of where people go, what they do, and if it is real, is always a source of contention. In comparison, this show realizes that it is serious, but makes it light hearted enough that anyone will want to watch it and not be offended (I’m assuming).

3. Kristen Bell Is A Great Actor

While this is probably a debatable topic, Kristen Bell has always cracked me up and does a great job in her movies. Is she the best actress that ever existed? No. But, she is a good actress and can play this part extremely well.

4. It Has Great Reviews

Now, I will admit that I would not consider myself a movie critic. I am closer to the average watcher, which is actually a good thing for you. By being an “average watcher” you know that there is a good chance that you will like what I do. We can extend this to others who review the show. “The Good Place” has received great reviews including a 90% from rotten tomatoes and an 8.6 out of 10 from TV.com. Overall, the critics are not their favorite fans, but the average person loves the show.

5. The Cliffhangers Will Get You

I started watching this show this last week. Now, I am almost wrapping up the entire first season. Why? Is this such a binge worthy show that you will lose your next week or two watching this? No. It’s not that good, but the cliffhangers at the end of each episode will have you saying “Okay, one more before we call it a night”. Trust me, you will want to watch at least one or two more episodes.

For all those people are looking for the next show to watch, “The Good Place”, has you covered. It has the humor, the actors/actresses, and the storyline to provide hours of entertainment. To the critics, this show might not be your favorite, but it is worth giving it a shot. So, cheers to watching more shows and movies during our weekend. We all work hard and it is nice to be able to relax and watch a funny show with some friends. What are you forkin’ waiting for? Go ahead and watch it and let me know your thoughts!
